The Utopia is a cut above most breakfast cafes, even in a town brimming with delicious early-morning options. Located in the midst of the Belmont shopping district, the front windows of the Utopia offer great people-watching, while sitting at the bar affords an opportunity to chat with the super-friendly (yet not agressive) waitstaff.

But it's the food that really stands out here: the Utopia's french toast has become something of a Portland legend, while the warm wild rice cereal is a favorite of Beth Reddy's. Personally, I can never resist the special, seasonal pancakes, filled with ricotta cheese and whatever fruit is in season - berries in the summer, apple/ginger/cranberry compote in the fall...you get the idea. Their scrambles are also delicious, and I hear good things about the corned beef hash. All in all, a delectable, traditional-yet-creative breakfast in a welcoming, pretty environment. -Emily
