Equinox has a lovely, semi-fancy atmosphere, and an excellent, low-key jazz quartet on the weekends. Their food is quite nice as well: seasonally appropriate local and hormone-free ingredients combined in artistic and unexpected ways make for dishes that are both attractive and very appetizing. I especially recommend the "autumn pillow" if you venture to Equinox in the fall: a delicious puff-pastry filled with all kinds of savories, including caramelized onions, portabello mushrooms and mascarpone.
The particularly eco-conscious among us will also be interested to know that Equinox's space, as well as being beautiful, was constructed with recycled building materials. There is even local art adorning the walls, all of which makes for a thoroughly Portlandian dining experience. -Emily
